What we do

Here at Core Training and Development, as well as teaching the core subjects of Maths, English and Sciences, along with PSHE and Art lessons, we also use The Thrive Approach which helps us to support children in their social and emotional development.

By using the thrive approach we aim to:

• Provide alternative support for children who are experiencing emotional, social or behavioural difficulties.
• Provide a safe and calm environment for children to develop their skills.
• Enable children to take pride in their achievements and enhance self-esteem.
• Help children to manage their feelings and develop skills to enjoy and participate in school life.
• Use positive approaches to manage all behaviours.

We are a complimentary core tutoring service that’s primary focus is on the SEMH needs of the children and young people that attend our centre using the Thrive approach, and our ultimate goal is to reintegrate children back into their mainstream environment or provide evidence to support transitions onto more specialised provisions.

Child Development

The Thrive Approach

In the Thrive Approach we use a developmental model to help us understand how we develop socially and emotionally from birth through to adulthood. This model gives us a framework for understanding what healthy child development looks like in terms of behaviour and learning and clarifies what the role of adults should be in facilitating a child’s development at each of the different stages. In addition, the model gives us a lens through which to look at and interpret children’s behaviour, enabling us to identify the particular developmental needs being signalled by their behaviour and to choose appropriate, targeted interventions designed to meet those needs.

Restorative Practices and encouragement

As well as the thrive approach, we also use restorative practices. This helps us to encourage students to take responsibility for their actions, teaches them how to deal with situations better, and how to prevent them from happening again.

If a student is removed from a lesson for poor behaviour choices we use Reflective chats,  giving the student time out to think about their poor behaviour choices and giving them time to reflect on how the situation has resulted in them being removed.

Once a student has had time to reflect,  a restorative chat with their Key Worker will take place, where the student and the Key Worker will discuss what happened, how this could have been approached better and what they could do differently should the situation arise again.

Pastoral Support (Including SEND)

We seek to respond quickly to emerging needs and work closely with other agencies, including:

• CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health service)
• Local NHS services
• SALT (speech and language therapy)
• SENSAP (SEN statutory assessment process team)
• Educational Psychology Service
• SENIT (complex needs advisory service)
• Leeds SEND Information Advice Service
• VIT (visual impairment team)

For children to succeed in all the many and varied ways necessary for them to grow and flourish, they must feel safe and secure. We work tirelessly to provide an environment where that is the case. Every child knows that if he or she has a problem we will do all we can to solve it. Kindness, good manners and tolerance for others are highly valued and encouraged. We are proud of the strong relationships that exists between staff and pupils and recognise the crucial value of an open and supportive partnership between home, school and ourselves. We provide each student with a Key Worker, this will be a member of staff whom that student has a positive relationship with. This involves a weekly check-in chat to catch up, and for students to raise any concerns they may have and for us to check every student’s welfare so that we can put the necessary interventions in place that may be required. Every learner who attends will also have an Individual Risk Assessment in place.
